Last year we created a free pdf download called ‘Pasture Dieback: 60+ species that will help you address your feed gap and improve your soil!’
Over summer it was peer reviewed by a dear and very knowledgeable friend (who has chosen to stay anonymous) who went over it with a fine-toothed comb. She suggested a few edits, and now we present version 2.
Apart from picking up on a couple of typos, and changing the cover, the main change is that species are now categorised as ‘warm season’ or ‘cool season’ which we hope will help you to refine your selection.
Pasture dieback is on the march in NSW and Queensland, affecting summer dominant grasses. That means the obvious thing to do to make sure there is forage for animals is to make sure there are plants that aren’t grasses. Bring on the multi species pasture! We’re sure you’re aware that there are other benefits too, so if you’re in that part of the world and looking for species ideas, check it out.
From the research, and what Nature shows us in thriving no-input systems, the more species in your pasture the better. However, that does not have to be your starting point. You might choose to add just one extra species this coming season, to just one area of your property. At the end of the day, it has to work for you. What will you try?
